about

Hello, I’m David.

Welcome to my site. Ill be posting all my future musings here, hopefully on a regular occurrence.

A little about me – I was born one crisp January afternoon in sunny Birmingham (don’t hold that against me) into a family of four, Mom, Dad and two brothers. One of the first decisions I ever had to make in my young life was a biggie – Aston Villa or Liverpool. Try as he might, my glory hunting, non-scouse, middle brother was never going to persuade me into supporting a team that would take about three hours to get to the ground by car and even longer on my bike/skateboard, no matter how good they were. And so the love affair began. I say love affair, it’s more of a rocky marriage (without any flings of course, I’ll always be true). That being said I’m glad I made that decision – I’d love to be able to remember my brothers trying to persuade me into supporting their team!

Fast forward a few years and a career in retail awaits. Ask most people and they will tell you that they have had a retail job at some point in their life, most will say that they hated it and that it was one of the worse jobs that they’ve ever had, some will say that it was just about getting a little bit of extra cash with which to spend on their weekends. Well, I was lucky enough to work for a great company with a great team and I really enjoyed it. In fact I worked for two great companies and went on to run a successful privately owned shop with that Liverpool supporting brother of mine. Retail work gets a bad rep sometimes, unfairly in most cases. You get great people skills on the shop floor, add to that sales, customer services (being customer focused), organisational skills, teamwork, leadership and above all you learn to deal with some pretty stressful situations. I wouldn’t swap that experience for the world.

Unfortunately, as much as I enjoyed those roles, retail wasn’t going in the right direction. With the steady growth of the internet came more and more competition, people were turning to sites such as asos.com to pick up their new threads instead of investing time on the high street.

It was then that I came across a role with a young startup company in the heart of Birmingham – A kids virtual world, offering children a safe environment in which to interact with their peers. I would ultimately be responsible for all aspects of community management, moderation and editorial content on the site. Within the three years of me being there I picked up expertise in all things social, I was lucky enough to be involved in a platform such as this just as the like of Facebook and Twitter really started making waves.

It was quite a jump in career, but it was one that was carefully thought out. After three years, I’m now in a position where I can really step into a role that fully exploits all of the skills that I’ve developed.

So to break it down, my experience is comprised of three components:

Community manager – Interacting with users on a day-by-day basis to ensure that they are both engaged and informed on the latest happenings. Experience of working closely with development teams to ensure that messaging is as wide reaching as possible, from on-site, to the development of e-newsletters and increased presence on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Moderation – A hands on approach to moderation ensuring that brand values are maintained at all times and that user generated content always maintains relevant.

Editorial – Consistently producing high quality, relevant content to expand and build up a lively and thriving community.
